There are several different types of ISA...
Cash ISAs
Cash ISA’s are similar to an ordinary savings account. You put cash in and earn interest on the amount. The interest on an ISA though is tax-free.
To open a cash ISA you must be a UK resident and aged over 16. There are many available on the market, some with variable rates, some with fixed rates, others may limit the access to money within the ISA. What is best for you will depend on your circumstances and needs.

Stocks & Shares ISAs
A stocks and shares ISA allows you to put money into different investments such as unit trusts, investment trusts as well as government bonds and corporate bonds.
Also, individual company shares can be placed within your ISA. But, of course, as with any investment in stocks and shares, the rewards may be greater, but so is the risk. So, unlike with cash ISAs, you should only invest if you’re prepared to take the risk that your investments can go down, as well as up, in value.
